Synopsis: Although anxiety is not classified as one of the core deficits of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), anxiety is the most common comorbid conditions among individuals with ASD. Anxiety is highly prevalent in individuals with ASD and can lead to significant distress and trauma if untreated. This half-day workshop will explore how anxiety and trauma impact autistic students’ functioning, as well as developing a better understanding of using evidence-based strategies and trauma informed practices when supporting autistic students in the classroom.

Learning Objectives: Participants will…
– Identify key characteristics of ASD, Anxiety and Trauma
– Learn about evidence-based strategies to support autistic students in managing anxiety
– Develop an understanding of trauma-informed practice and its principles
– Gather additional relevant resources about anxiety and trauma to support the classroom

Additional Notes:
It is highly recommended that participants use their own devices (e.g., laptop, desktop) equipped with a functioning webcam and
microphone for this workshop, as there might be an interactive component (e.g., small break out group discussions/activities).

The Lab Space at the Key Learning Centre is also booked, just in case there is interest for people to meet in person.

Our School District has the honour of having Zakary Myers, the SOGI 123 Provinal Lead, here next week on January 24th. Zakary will be facilitating a session from 4-7pm exploring intersectionality in our schools and lives.
INTERSECTIONALITY is the complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (in relation to race, gender, economics, religion, sexuality, ethnicity, physical appearance, etc.) combine, overlap, or intersect especially in the experiences of marginalized individuals or groups.
This workshop is open to teachers, EAs, YCWs, administrators, and any other SD60 employees that are interested in attending. There will be a light dinner provided and some fun door prizes.
Check out the poster for details. And please share with other SD60 employees that you think may be interested.
