Are you looking to improve your literacy instruction? Are you wondering how to plan for language arts in a way that empowers student readers and writers? Join Karen Filewych for 7 professional development sessions throughout the 2024-2025 school year. These ongoing sessions will provide practical strategies and opportunities to ask questions about the teaching of literacy. Karen will tailor the sessions to meet the needs of participants. We are looking for a cohort of 10-15 teachers.

First session will be on September 18th 1-3 pm with TTOC coverage provided.  All other dates and information can be found on the poster and/or link below.

What is the most effective way to teach reading in an early
primary classroom? Are foundational skills sufficient for students
to become fully literate? Join BC author and educator Adrienne
Gear as she explores these questions, discusses the latest trends
in reading instruction and shares her thoughts on what a holistic
reading program in the early years might look like.

Adrienne will also share ideas from her new book, Powerful
Thinking, which explores practical ways of building knowledge
and stretching thinking through content-rich interactive read-
alouds that help engage young children in the awe and wonder
surrounding them.

Adrienne will end the day with a practical unit from her book
Powerful Understanding which explores practical ways to help
children develop a deeper understanding of SELF and OTHERS.

DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION TO ASD (5-DAY COURSE)
If you’ve met one person with ASD, you’ve met one person with ASD. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it is characterized by a wide range of symptoms and severity. Although there are core characteristics present in all individuals with a diagnosis of ASD, there is much variability across individuals. How do we best support students with ASD given their varying profiles?

The Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders: Practical Applications course provides a comprehensive overview of ASD, with an emphasis on topics relevant to the school setting. These topics include basics of ASD, individual differences, understanding and changing behaviour, social and communication skills, life skills, and much more!

Participants are given ample opportunity to participate in practical hands-on activities, and application exercises that will prepare them to apply the concepts and strategies into their instructional program. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with knowledge about AD and the tools to support the unique needs of these students.

This 5-day, 30-hour, intensive practical course is offered to teachers, paraprofessionals, and other educational staff working at any grade level (K – 12) to support students with AD in developing their social, academic, and adaptive skills. A certificate showing 30 hours of instruction will be provided to participants who complete the course.
