Do you teach Core French and want practical, confidence-building strategies for
teaching Beginner French (Grades 5-7) in a safe and collaborative environment?
This workshop provides a safe space for Core French teachers to learn research-based practical strategies and take risks, even if they are beginner French learners themselves. Whether you are new to teaching French, returning to the classroom, or looking for fresh ideas, this workshop is designed to support you in a welcoming and collaborative learning environment.
Discover a collection of free, teacher-created units developed specifically for Beginner French learners. These resources include English phonetic support for French words and expressions, interactive activities, games, embedded second/additional language instructional strategies and communicative and actionable tasks that help students build confidence while developing a love of learning French. Together, we will explore as many of the learning activities as possible. The session will remain flexible and responsive to the needs of the group, helping to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for learning and using French. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical, classroom-ready strategies and access to a wealth of free resources from Simon Fraser University’s Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (SFU-OFFA) Teaching French for Beginners project. They will be equipped to confidently implement engaging, low-prep learning experiences that support beginner French learners and foster a positive, successful language-learning environment.
Biography:
Shauna Nero is the French Programs Coordinator for the Mission School District, Regional Coordinator for French Program Educators across Greater Vancouver and Vancouver Island, and Coordinator of the British Columbia School DELF Centre. She is also an educational consultant specializing in French language education. Previously, she coordinated the Provincial Network of French Program Administrators and Educators at Simon Fraser University’s Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (SFU-OFFA).
Studies at the middle and secondary levels, Shauna is passionate about supporting educators and improving student success in French programs. She also teaches methodology courses for pre-service teachers at Simon Fraser University and has served as a vice-principal in a dual-track French Immersion elementary school. Her work is grounded in plurilingual and intercultural approaches, Universal Design for Learning, and action-oriented pedagogy, helping students build confidence, language proficiency, and meaningful connections to French.
