Words Matter: Intentional Word Study in the Elementary Classroom

Join Karen Filewych, author, teacher, writer, and literacy consultant for a workshop to kickstart your literacy planning! Karen will join us in person for this session on intentional literacy instruction for the elementary classroom. Her newest book, Literacy Instruction Matters will be provided to all participants who attend this first session.

Words are the foundation of reading and writing and therefore an essential component of our instruction. And yet, it can sometimes be challenging to ensure a meaningful, integrated focus on words within our classrooms. In this session, Karen will discuss how to approach words in the context of oral language, spelling, structural analysis, word walls, morphology, the three tiers of vocabulary, and vocabulary instruction. She will guide participants in planning a weekly schedule for ELA as well as looking at an overall plan for the year. Teachers will walk away from this practical session feeling empowered!

The session is open to teachers in grades 1 through 7.
